  1. Reinforce the front door strike plate

    Most forced entries split the jamb rather than defeat the lock. A reinforced or box strike anchored with three inch screws into the stud behind the frame costs less than the deadbolt does, and it raises the force needed to open the door enormously. Do this before buying a better lock.

  2. Treat the garage to house door as an entry door

    It is the single most overlooked door in the city. Once someone is inside the garage they are invisible from the street and from every neighbour, and in most houses that door still carries builder grade or interior grade hardware. It deserves a proper deadbolt.

  3. Close the sliding patio door lift out gap

    Lock your patio door and lift the moving panel hard. If it rises more than a few millimetres, the panel can be lifted clear of the bottom rail and taken out of the frame while the latch is still locked. Anti lift blocks in the top track cost very little and take minutes.
