High Security Lock Installation in Mississauga

A high security lock differs from a standard one in three ways: it resists picking and bumping through a more complex mechanism, it resists drilling through hardened inserts, and its keys cannot be copied without authorisation. Johnson Locksmith fits high security cylinders on commercial and residential doors across Mississauga.

The three things a high security cylinder actually does

The phrase gets used loosely, so it helps to be precise. A cylinder earns the label by defending against three separate attacks, and a product that only handles one of them is not a high security lock, whatever the packaging says.

  • Manipulation resistanceSpool, serrated and mushroom security pins defeat basic picking by giving false feedback. Sidebars, rotating pins and secondary locking elements defeat it more thoroughly, because the key has to satisfy two independent mechanisms at once.
  • Bump resistanceBumping uses a specially cut key and a sharp tap to bounce every pin to the shear line at once. Sidebar and rotating pin designs are immune to it, because a bounced pin still has not turned to the correct angle.
  • Physical attack resistanceHardened steel inserts and free spinning ball bearings stop a drill bit walking through the shear line. Case hardening and anti pull furniture defeat snapping and pulling attacks on the cylinder body.
  • Key controlThe one that gets forgotten, and arguably the most important. A patent protected blank means keys are supplied only to authorised dealers and cut only against a named signature on file.

How the grading systems read

Two independent standards matter in Canada, and they measure different things. ANSI/BHMA grades durability and forced entry resistance. UL 437 tests specifically against picking, drilling and forcing. A cylinder carrying both tells you more than a marketing claim does.

What the standards on a lock actually certify
MarkingWhat it testsWhat it does not tell you
ANSI/BHMA Grade 1Cycle life, strike and impact resistance under repeated loadNothing about picking, bumping or key copying
UL 437Resistance to picking, drilling and forcing for a set timeNothing about long term durability in daily use
Active patent on the keywayThat blanks are legally controlled and copies are traceableNothing about the strength of the mechanism itself
"Bump proof" on the box, with no standard citedNothing. It is an unregulated marketing phraseWhether the cylinder was independently tested at all

Which doors in a Mississauga business justify the spend

High security cylinders cost several times a standard one, and putting them on every door in a building is usually the wrong allocation. The right approach is to identify the doors where a quiet, traceless entry would be genuinely damaging.

In practice that means the doors behind which the value sits rather than the doors at the perimeter: a stock room in a Dixie Road warehouse holding small high value goods, a cash office, a pharmacy or clinic storage room, a records room holding client files, a server or comms room, and the mechanical and roof access doors that a determined intruder uses to bypass the front of the building entirely.

The perimeter doors are often better served by a good Grade 1 lock plus a reinforced frame and an alarm, because a front door attack is loud and visible and the defence you want there is time and noise, not pick resistance.

Key control is the part that pays for itself

The most common way a commercial key system fails has nothing to do with the lock. Someone who was issued a key had a copy cut at a mall kiosk before they returned the original, and now there is a working key in circulation that nobody knows about and no lock will ever notice.

A restricted keyway ends that. The blank is patent protected and not sold to the trade at large, so a copy can only be cut by the authorised dealer, only against a signature that is on file, and only with a record of who asked and when. When someone leaves, you know exactly how many keys existed and whether they all came back.

Patents expire, and this matters when you are choosing. A keyway whose patent lapses becomes a keyway anyone can make blanks for, at which point the key control benefit quietly disappears while the lock keeps looking identical. Ask what the patent expiry is before you commit a whole building to a system.

What high security locks do not do

It is worth saying plainly, because it prevents an expensive mistake. A high security cylinder defends the cylinder. It does nothing for the rest of the door.

Fitting a Medeco or a Mul-T-Lock into a hollow aluminium storefront frame with a single glazed panel beside it protects a lock that nobody was going to attack, on a door that opens with a brick. The same is true of a superb cylinder in a jamb held by two inch screws into pine trim.

Spend in order. Frame and strike reinforcement first, because that is where forced entries actually happen. Glazing next, if there is glass beside or in the door. Then the cylinder. A Grade 1 standard lock in a reinforced frame beats a high security cylinder in a weak one every time, and it costs less.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a lock high security?
Three things together: a mechanism that resists picking and bumping, usually through a sidebar or rotating pins, hardened inserts that resist drilling and forcing, and a patent protected keyway so keys cannot be copied without authorisation. A lock with only one of the three is not high security.
Are high security locks worth the cost?
On the doors that protect something specific, yes. Stock rooms, cash offices, records, server rooms and roof access justify them. On perimeter doors the better spend is usually frame reinforcement, glazing and an alarm, because a front door attack is defeated by time and noise rather than pick resistance.
Can high security keys be copied?
Only by the authorised dealer, and only against a signed authorisation from a person named on the system's file. That is the point of a restricted keyway. Ask when the keyway patent expires, because once it lapses the blanks become generally available and the key control benefit ends.
Do I need high security locks at home?
Most homes do not, but there are two good cases. One is a house where keys have been handed out widely and you want copying under control. The other is a door that has already been attacked, where an upgraded cylinder paired with a reinforced strike is a sensible response.
