Commercial Lock Rekeying Across Mississauga
Commercial rekeying changes the pinning in your existing cylinders so every previously issued key stops working, without replacing the hardware. A whole building is normally done in a single visit. Johnson Locksmith rekeys offices, retail units and industrial buildings across Mississauga.

When a business should rekey
The trigger is always the same underlying fact: a working key exists that you cannot account for. In a business that happens far more often than in a home, because keys are issued to people rather than owned by them.
- An employee with keys has leftParticularly on an involuntary departure. The returned key tells you nothing about copies, and a hardware store copy costs a few dollars and leaves no record.
- A tenant has moved outStandard practice at every turnover. The outgoing tenant's contractors, cleaners and staff all held keys at some point.
- You have taken over a lease or bought a businessYou have inherited an unknown key population from an operation you were not part of. Rekey before you open.
- A key has been lost on siteWorse if it was on a ring with anything identifying the address, which in practice it usually is.
- A break in has occurredEven where entry was forced, assume keys may have been taken. Insurers frequently expect a rekey as part of the claim.
- The key register has stopped matching realityIf nobody can say how many keys exist, the system has already failed and a rekey is the reset.
How a building rekey is actually run
The work itself is straightforward. What makes a commercial rekey succeed or turn into three return visits is the survey beforehand.
We walk the building first and record every door, the cylinder type in it, and who currently needs to open it. That survey catches the things that derail a rekey day: the two doors running a different brand than everything else, the padlocks on the yard gate and the roof hatch that nobody counted, the cylinder in the aluminium storefront that needs a specific tailpiece, and the interior door that has been painted shut since 2019.
Then the pinning happens. Where the building runs interchangeable cores, cores are pinned at the bench in advance and swapped on site in seconds per door. Where the cylinders are conventional, each is removed at the door, repinned and refitted, which is around ten to twenty minutes per cylinder.
Finally, keys are cut, tested at every door they should open, tested at one door they should not, and handed over against a signed register.
Rekeying compared with the alternatives
Rekeying is not the only way to retire a key population, and for some buildings it is not the best one.
| Approach | Time for a 12 door building | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional rekey | Half a day on site | Hardware is sound and the key population just needs resetting |
| Interchangeable core swap | Well under an hour | The building already runs cores and you hold the control key |
| Full hardware replacement | One to two days | Locks are worn, mismatched, or below the grade the doors need |
| Move to a restricted keyway | Half to a full day, plus design | Uncontrolled copying is the actual problem you are solving |
| Access control on key doors | Days, with cabling | Staff turnover is frequent and you need instant revocation and a log |
Building a key register that survives
Most commercial key systems do not fail because of a locksmith. They fail because over five years, keys are issued informally, staff leave without a handover, and nobody writes anything down. By the end nobody can say how many keys exist, which means the honest answer is that the building is not key controlled at all.
A key register is a simple document and it only needs four columns: which key, who has it, when it was issued, and when it came back. Signed on issue and signed on return. Kept by one named person, not by whoever is at the desk.
Pair that with two rules and it holds. Keys are issued to a named individual, never to a role or a drawer. And a departing employee's key return is part of the same checklist as their laptop and their fob, so it cannot be quietly skipped.
If you want the register to be genuinely enforceable rather than a good intention, move to a restricted keyway at the same time as the rekey. Then unauthorised copies are not merely against policy, they are not obtainable.
Rekeying a multi tenant building
Multi tenant properties in Mississauga, and there are a great many small industrial and office condominium units across the Dixie, Meadowvale and Airport corridors, have a specific requirement: the landlord needs to reach every unit for emergencies and maintenance, and no tenant may reach another tenant's unit.
That is a master key system rather than a flat rekey, with a landlord master over per unit change keys. Getting the boundary right matters legally as well as practically: the landlord's right of entry is governed by the lease, and holding a master does not by itself create a right to enter.
The practical recommendation for these buildings is interchangeable cores throughout. A tenant turnover then costs a two minute core swap rather than a locksmith visit, which means turnovers actually get rekeyed instead of being skipped because the building is busy.
