Why a car key costs what it costs

Customers are frequently surprised by the price of a car key, and the reason is that a modern key is not one thing. It is a cut blade, a transponder chip authenticated by the immobiliser, and often a remote or a proximity transmitter, and each of those is a separate operation.

The blade is cut to the code derived from the vehicle identification number rather than copied, which is why a key can be made with no original in hand. The chip is then programmed to the immobiliser, because without a valid response the engine control unit will not permit fuel or spark. A key cut without programming opens the doors, turns the ignition, and leaves the car cranking without starting.

The equipment that performs the programming is expensive, needs frequent subscription updates to keep pace with new models, and is what separates an automotive locksmith from a key cutting kiosk.

The single most useful thing you can do about car keys

Have a spare made while you still have one working key.

The gap between the two situations is much larger than most drivers expect. With a working key in hand, adding a spare is a comparatively quick job, and on many vehicles it can be done through an onboard procedure using the existing key.

With every key lost, the immobiliser has to be approached with no credential at all. On several makes that means reading a module directly, and on many it triggers a deliberate security wait period of ten to thirty minutes or longer during which nothing can happen. The job takes longer, costs considerably more, and on a small number of vehicles it is a dealer only operation.

So if you are driving on a single key, the cheapest automotive locksmith visit you will ever make is the one you book before you need it.

What we need to know when you call about a vehicle

Four facts let us quote accurately and bring the right equipment, and they take thirty seconds to gather.

  1. The make, model and year. This determines the key type, the programming route, and whether a security wait period applies.
  2. Whether it has a turn key ignition or a push button start. That single fact separates a transponder key job from a proximity key job.
  3. Whether you have any working key left, including one at home. This is the biggest single factor in both time and price.
  4. Whether the vehicle has been sitting. A car that has not started for days may have a marginal battery, and programming holds the ignition on for a long period, so a jump pack comes along.

Locksmith or dealership for your vehicle?

Both can do the work, and the honest answer varies by vehicle rather than by principle.

Protecting your vehicle from relay theft

Worth knowing because it is the current method and because the defence costs almost nothing.

A proximity key is constantly broadcasting a short range signal. A relay attack uses two devices, one held near the house to pick up that signal and one at the car to retransmit it, convincing the vehicle the key is present. The car unlocks and starts. Nothing is broken, no alarm sounds, and there is no forced entry for an insurer to see.

The defence is to stop the key broadcasting when it is at rest. A signal blocking pouch costs very little and works, provided it is genuinely closed. Do not leave the fob near the front door, a window, or a wall shared with the driveway, because that is where the range is picked up. Many vehicles also have a motion sensing sleep mode for the fob that can be enabled in the settings, and it is worth checking whether yours does.

A mechanical steering wheel lock is unfashionable and remains effective, precisely because it cannot be defeated electronically and it is visible from outside the car.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a car key if I have lost all of them?
Yes on most vehicles. The key is cut to the code derived from the vehicle identification number and then programmed to the immobiliser. It takes longer and costs more than adding a spare, and several makes impose a security wait period during the procedure.
Do you come to the vehicle or do I need a tow?
We come to the vehicle. That is the main practical advantage over a dealership, because a car with no working keys cannot be driven and would otherwise need recovering. The work is normally completed where the car sits, at the roadside or in a driveway.
Is an automotive locksmith cheaper than the dealer?
Usually, and the saving is larger than the price difference suggests because the dealer route often adds a tow. The exceptions are vehicles where the manufacturer restricts security access to the franchise network, and some very recent models, and we will tell you before dispatching if yours is one.
How do I stop my keyless car being stolen by relay attack?
Keep the fob in a signal blocking pouch at home and away from the front door, a window or a wall next to the driveway, since that is where the signal is captured. Check whether your fob has a motion sensing sleep mode, and consider a visible steering wheel lock.
