Where we mean by Hurontario

When we say the Hurontario corridor, this is the ground we mean. If your address sits just outside it, we still cover you: the whole of Mississauga is inside our area.

  • Hurontario Street, also known as Highway 10
  • The Hazel McCallion LRT line
  • Eglinton Avenue and Britannia Road crossings
  • Cooksville and City Centre approaches
  • The plazas between Central Parkway and Bristol Road

A corridor rather than a neighbourhood

Hurontario is the spine of Mississauga, running the full height of the city, and it is best thought of as a strip rather than a district. What sits along it changes every couple of kilometres, and so does the kind of work.

South of Dundas the frontage is older, low rise and commercial. Through City Centre it is towers. North of Eglinton it becomes a long run of plazas, mid rise apartments and light commercial, with residential subdivisions set back behind on both sides. A single street name covers all of it, which is why an address alone is more useful here than a neighbourhood name.

For a locksmith the useful consequence is that the corridor generates a genuinely mixed caseload: suite lockouts in the towers, vehicle lockouts in the large surface lots behind the plazas, and commercial callouts from the units fronting the street.

Plaza units and what they need

The commercial plazas along Hurontario are dominated by aluminium storefront doors, and that single hardware type accounts for most of the commercial work along the corridor.

A narrow stile aluminium door uses a hookbolt or a deadlatch in a slim frame, and it is a design with known behaviours. The frame moves seasonally, the door drops slightly on its pivots or hinges, and the bolt stops engaging fully. The unit still appears locked at closing, and it is not.

The specific check worth doing is to lock up, then pull hard on the door. If it moves noticeably, the bolt is not fully in its keeper. That is an adjustment rather than a replacement in most cases, and it costs a fraction of what an overnight loss does.

The second common plaza issue is the rear service door. These get propped, chained and bolted for practical reasons, and every one of those is a fire code problem with a legal alternative available.

The LRT construction and getting around it

The Hazel McCallion LRT line has been under construction along Hurontario for years, and it has reshaped how the corridor drives. Lane closures, shifted intersections, restricted left turns and changed plaza entrances are the norm rather than the exception, and they move.

Practically, that means an arrival estimate that assumes a clear run up Hurontario is optimistic, and it also means the fastest route to a Hurontario address is often not Hurontario. From the Dixie Road office we usually approach on Eglinton, Britannia or Central Parkway and come at the address from the side street rather than the main road.

It also matters for you. If your building or unit has had its entrance moved by construction hoarding, say so when you call, because a technician circling a closed entrance is time neither of us gets back.

Locksmith questions from Hurontario

How long will it take you to reach an address on Hurontario?
Ten to twenty minutes from the Dixie Road office depending how far along the corridor you are. LRT construction makes Hurontario itself slow, so the approach is usually via Eglinton, Britannia or Central Parkway. You will be given a realistic window for your specific address.
My storefront door will not lock properly. Is that a big repair?
Usually not. Aluminium storefront doors drop slightly over time and the hookbolt stops fully engaging its keeper, which leaves the unit appearing locked when it is not. It is normally an adjustment rather than a replacement. Lock up and pull hard on the door to test yours.
Do you cover the whole length of Hurontario?
Yes, from the Port Credit end north past Britannia and beyond, and at any hour. Because the corridor runs the height of the city, give the street number rather than the neighbourhood name so the arrival estimate you get is accurate.
