Where we mean by Clarkson

When we say Clarkson, this is the ground we mean. If your address sits just outside it, we still cover you: the whole of Mississauga is inside our area.

  • Clarkson Village on Lakeshore Road West
  • Clarkson GO Station
  • Rattray Marsh Conservation Area
  • Southdown Road
  • Bromsgrove Road and Meadow Wood

A commuter neighbourhood, and what that does to car key calls

Clarkson GO is one of the busiest stations on the Lakeshore West line, and the surface and structure parking around it fills every weekday morning with cars that sit untouched for ten or eleven hours.

That produces a very specific pattern of calls, concentrated between five and seven in the evening. A commuter comes off a train, walks to the car, and finds the fob will not open it. Roughly half of those are a dead fob battery, which after a long cold day is a common failure, and most of the rest are keys locked inside or a key that has been lost somewhere between the office and the platform.

The practical advice for anyone parking here daily is worth two minutes. Replace the fob battery when the dashboard first warns you rather than months later, keep a mechanical emergency blade somewhere other than in the car, and if you are down to one key for the vehicle, have a spare made before you need one. An all keys lost job on a modern car in a parking structure at six in the evening is the most expensive version of this problem.

Clarkson Village and the small business strip

The village stretch of Lakeshore Road West is independent retail and food: small units, older buildings, and a lot of aluminium storefront doors that have been in service for decades.

The recurring hardware issue is the narrow stile door itself. It moves seasonally, drops slightly on its pivots, and the hookbolt or deadlatch stops fully engaging its keeper. The unit appears locked and is not, which is the worst possible failure mode because nobody notices until something is missing.

The test takes five seconds and every business on the strip should do it weekly: lock up, then pull hard on the door. Any noticeable movement means the bolt is not seated in the keeper.

For the food businesses the second issue is rear service doors, which take constant delivery abuse and end up with failed closers and, too often, improvised securing arrangements that a fire inspector will not accept.

The residential streets and the ravine lots

North and west of the village, Clarkson runs into established residential streets of mixed vintage, and a number of them back onto the Rattray Marsh and the ravine corridors running down to the lake.

A ravine lot is a lovely thing to own and it changes what the back of the house needs. There is typically no neighbour overlooking the rear, no street lighting, and a treed approach that offers cover. The back door and the sliding patio door on those houses deserve more attention than they usually get.

Two cheap checks matter here. The rear door should have a proper deadbolt with a reinforced strike, not a lighter lock chosen because it faces the garden. And the patio slider should be tested for the lift out gap: lock it, lift the panel hard, and if it rises more than a few millimetres it can be taken out of the track while still locked.

Locksmith questions from Clarkson

My fob will not open my car at Clarkson GO. Is it the battery?
Very often, especially after a car has sat in the cold all day. A weak coin cell can read fine on a meter and still fail under transmit load. If the fob has been losing range gradually over recent weeks, that is the classic sign. We can replace the battery and test the fob on site.
How do I know my Clarkson Village shop door is actually locked?
Lock up, then pull hard on the door. Any noticeable movement means the hookbolt is not fully seated in its keeper, which happens as narrow stile aluminium doors drop over time. It is normally an adjustment rather than a replacement, and worth checking weekly.
My house backs onto the ravine. What should I check?
That the rear door has a proper deadbolt with a reinforced strike rather than lighter hardware chosen because it faces the garden, and that the patio slider cannot be lifted out of its track. Lock the slider and lift the panel hard: more than a few millimetres of rise means it needs anti lift blocks.
