Starting prices

What the common jobs start at

Every figure below is a starting price for the simplest version of that job. Hardware, the hour, the distance, and what we find on the door move it, which is what the rest of this page is about.

Home and property

Houses, townhomes and condo suites across Mississauga.

House lockout
from $35
Opening a locked door without damage wherever the lock allows. Charged separately: high security cylinders, seized locks, and any replacement hardware.
Lock change or installation
from $35
Labour to fit new hardware. The lock itself is quoted with it. Charged separately: the hardware, and boring a door that has never had a lock in it.
Lock rekeying
from $19
Per cylinder, re-pinned so every old key stops working. Charged separately: cylinders worn beyond rekeying, and restricted keyway blanks.
Safe opening
from $35
Quoted on the phone, because safes vary more than any other lock we handle. Charged separately: replacement locks, and repair after a forced or damaged safe.

Vehicles

Done at your vehicle, so a car with no keys does not need a tow.

Car lockout
from $35
Opening the vehicle at the roadside, without damaging the seal or the lock. Charged separately: key cutting or programming, if the key is lost rather than locked inside.
Car key made
from $100
Cutting a key at the vehicle. Programming is priced separately below. Charged separately: immobiliser programming, and proximity or smart key housings.
Key programming
from $80
Pairing a transponder key or fob to the immobiliser. Varies most by make. Charged separately: the key or fob itself, and vehicles needing dealer only security access.
Ignition repair
from $130
A worn ignition cylinder that no longer turns, repaired or replaced. Charged separately: electronic steering column lock modules, which are a dealer level job.

Business and commercial

Offices, retail units, restaurants and warehouses. Priced per site, because a storefront door and a warehouse exit are not the same job.

Office or commercial unit lockout
Quoted on the call
Opening a commercial door once authority to enter has been confirmed. Charged separately: high security cylinders, electric strikes and access control faults.
Restaurant or bar lockout
Quoted on the call
Attended at closing time and before service, at the hours hospitality works. Charged separately: exit device repairs, door closers and replacement hardware.
Commercial lock service
Quoted on the call
On site labour for repairs, adjustments and hardware changes. Charged separately: parts, master key system design, and access control hardware.

Prices are in Canadian dollars. You are told the full total, including attendance, before a van is dispatched, and we will send it by text if you ask. There is no low headline figure here that turns into something else on arrival. Call (289) 324-0340 and describe the job for a firm number.

How locksmith pricing is actually built

Every locksmith job has two components. Getting a technician and a stocked van to your address, and doing the work once there. A quote that mentions only one of them is incomplete, and the missing half is where unpleasant surprises live.

On top of that sit a small number of genuine variables. The hour of the day, because covering three in the morning costs more to provide than three in the afternoon. The type of lock, because a standard cylinder and a high security cylinder are different jobs. Whether parts are needed. And on vehicles, whether you still have a working key, which is the single largest factor in an automotive quote.

None of those are surprises a competent locksmith cannot flag on the phone once you describe what you are looking at. That is the test worth applying: not whether the price is the lowest, but whether the person quoting it can tell you in advance what would change it.

What changes the price, and what does not

These are the only things that should move a quote, and each should be raised before work starts rather than discovered on the invoice.

How to compare quotes without getting caught

The locksmith trade has a well documented problem with call centres advertising local numbers and selling jobs on to whoever bids. The quote you are given in that model was never the dispatching business's to honour.

  1. Ask for the total, with the callout already included, not a job price and a callout quoted separately.
  2. Ask what specific circumstances would change it, and write the answer down.
  3. Ask for the quote by text before agreeing to a dispatch. A real business sends it without hesitation.
  4. Ask for the legal business name and street address, and check the phone is answered by that name rather than as a generic locksmith service.
  5. Treat a price well below everyone else as a warning rather than a bargain.
  6. Expect to be asked for identification. A locksmith who does not check would not check for anyone else calling about your address either.

Ways to spend less on locksmith work

Some of these save you a callout entirely, which is a better outcome for you than a cheaper callout.

  • Have a spare car key made while you still have oneThis is the largest single saving available in automotive work. An all keys lost job is substantially more expensive than adding a spare, and several manufacturers impose a security wait period on top.
  • Do all your doors in one visitRekeying is priced per cylinder plus a single callout, so four doors in one visit costs far less than four separate appointments.
  • Rekey rather than replace where the hardware is soundYou are paying for labour and pins instead of new locks, and it achieves the actual goal, which is retiring the old keys.
  • Book non urgent work in daylightPlanned rekeys, new hardware and upgrades all cost less on a Tuesday morning than at midnight, and an honest locksmith will tell you when your situation can wait.
  • Fix a stiff lock before it strands youA cylinder that has been getting harder to turn is how keys snap, usually in January. A cleaned cylinder or a fresh key cut from code is a fraction of an emergency extraction.
  • Keep a spare with a neighbourA cut key in someone's kitchen drawer costs a few dollars and prevents the most common callout there is.

Frequently asked questions

Why will a locksmith not give a flat price over the phone?
A good one will, for the job you describe. What they cannot do is promise it before knowing what the door is, because a standard cylinder and a high security cylinder are genuinely different jobs. The right approach is a firm total for the job as described, plus a clear list of what would change it.
What is bait pricing and how do I spot it?
Bait pricing is a headline service call figure, well below everyone else, that becomes a much larger number once the technician is at your door. The tell is what the figure is attached to: a starting price for a named job is a price, whereas a suspiciously cheap callout is a hook, because the callout was never the expensive part.
Can a locksmith charge me more than the quote?
Not by much. Under Ontario's Consumer Protection Act a consumer generally cannot be charged more than ten percent above an estimate they agreed to. Ask for the quote by text before the van is dispatched, because that written record is what makes the provision practical to rely on.
Do you charge a callout fee on top of the work?
The prices on this page are starting prices for the work itself. When you call, you are given the full total for your job, attendance included, before a van is dispatched. If anyone quotes you a job price and a callout separately, add them together before comparing, because a low job price attached to a large callout is the oldest trick in this trade.
Is it cheaper to rekey than to replace locks?
Yes, consistently, because you are paying for labour and pins rather than new hardware. Rekeying is also faster, at ten to twenty minutes per cylinder against thirty to sixty for a replacement. Replacing is the right spend only when the hardware is worn, damaged or below the grade the door needs.
Do you take card, or is it cash only?
Pay by a traceable method wherever you can, and be wary of any locksmith who insists on cash. An itemised invoice carrying the legal business name and street address is what you should receive regardless of how you pay.

Locked out, or need a lock sorted properly?

Call and you will speak to someone who can tell you the price and a realistic arrival window before a van is dispatched. Any hour, any day.
