New Lock Installation for Mississauga Homes

Lock installation covers fitting new hardware to a door, whether that door already has a lock or has never been drilled. The job includes boring or reusing the prep, aligning the latch to the strike, and testing the door under its own weight. Johnson Locksmith installs residential locks throughout Mississauga.

Fitting a lock is mostly about alignment

The lock itself is the easy part. What separates a lock that works for twenty years from one that starts sticking in six months is whether the latch or bolt lands cleanly in the strike, with the door hanging as it actually hangs rather than as it did on the day it was hung.

Doors move. A wood door in a Mississauga winter is a different shape than the same door in August, and a house that has settled will have pulled the frame slightly out of square. If the strike plate is even two millimetres out, the bolt drags on the way in, and every time you throw it you are wearing the lock and pulling the screws.

So a proper installation ends with the door closed, latched, and thrown, then checked again with the door swung from open and allowed to close under its own weight. If the bolt needs a shoulder against the door to throw, the strike gets moved. That five minutes is the difference between a good job and a callback.

What grade of lock does a house actually need?

Residential locks are graded by ANSI/BHMA on a three tier scale, and the grade describes tested durability and forced entry resistance rather than marketing. Knowing the difference stops you overspending on a back door and underspending on a front one.

ANSI/BHMA grades for residential door hardware
GradeTested forSensible use
Grade 3Basic residential duty. Lower cycle and strike test thresholds.Interior doors and low risk secondary doors. Not a front door choice.
Grade 2Heavy residential and light commercial duty. The realistic default for a house entry door. Good value.
Grade 1Commercial duty. Highest cycle counts and strike resistance.Front doors on higher risk properties, and any door in daily heavy use.

Which doors around a Mississauga house need what

The right hardware depends on what the door is made of, how exposed it is, and what is behind it. A back door onto a fenced yard that backs onto a ravine is not a lower risk door just because it is at the back.

  • Front entry doorA Grade 1 or Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a minimum one inch throw, plus a reinforced strike with three inch screws reaching the stud behind the jamb.
  • Side and garage to house doorTreat this as an entry door, not an interior one. It is often the weakest point on the house and it opens into a space nobody can see from the street.
  • Back and patio doorsSliding doors need a dedicated approach rather than a deadbolt. See our patio door lock page for what actually works on a slider.
  • Doors with glass sidelightsA double cylinder deadbolt is sometimes suggested here so a broken sidelight does not give access to a thumbturn. Read the fire safety note below before choosing one.
  • Condo suite doorsUsually a fire rated assembly. The hardware must be listed for the door, and the condo corporation may specify it. Check with management first.

A note on double cylinder deadbolts and fire safety

A double cylinder deadbolt needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass to turn a thumbturn. It also means that in a fire, in the dark, in smoke, nobody leaves through that door without finding the key.

The Ontario Building Code requires that a means of egress can be opened from the inside without a key on many door assemblies, and some condo corporations and insurers prohibit them outright. We will fit one where it is permitted and where you have decided it is the right trade, but we will tell you the trade first.

In most cases the better answer to a vulnerable sidelight is laminated or security film glazing plus a single cylinder deadbolt, which removes the risk without locking anyone in.

Installing a lock on a door that has never had one

Fresh installation means boring the door: a large cross bore for the lock body and a smaller edge bore for the bolt, then mortising the faceplate flush and cutting the strike pocket in the jamb. Done with a proper jig it is clean and quick. Done freehand it produces a hole that no escutcheon will ever quite cover.

Steel and fibreglass doors need the right bit and a slower feed rate, and a steel door with an internal frame has to be bored where the frame actually is, not where it looks like it should be. Fibreglass skins chip if the bit is dull or pushed.

If the door is fire rated, boring it can void the rating. Fire doors on condo suites and on the garage to house opening in many Mississauga homes are labelled on the hinge edge. If there is a label, the answer is a lock listed for use on that assembly and prepped within the permitted limits, not a hole drilled where it suits.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to install a new door lock?
Replacing a lock in existing prep takes about twenty to forty minutes per door including alignment. A fresh installation on an undrilled door takes closer to an hour because the door has to be bored and the strike pocket cut in the jamb.
Can I supply my own lock and have you fit it?
Yes. Bring the hardware and we will fit and align it. It is worth checking two things before you buy: that the backset matches your door prep, and that the lock is right for the door material, because a lightweight interior set on an exterior steel door will not last.
What is the strongest lock for a front door?
A Grade 1 deadbolt with a one inch throw bolt, fitted into a reinforced strike anchored with three inch screws into the framing. The strike matters as much as the lock, because most forced entries split the jamb rather than defeat the cylinder.
Do you install locks on fire rated condo doors?
Yes, using hardware listed for fire rated assemblies and within the prep limits that keep the rating intact. Many Mississauga condo corporations also require that suite door hardware changes are reported to management, so check with your concierge before booking.
