What to have ready when you call

Thirty seconds of preparation gets you an accurate quote instead of a range, and it means the right tools come off the van the first time.

• Where you are, precisely. A street address, or a plaza name plus the unit. In a condo, the tower and the parking level, and whether a technician can reach you without a fob. Mississauga has roads that change name partway along and addresses that exist twice at different ends of the city.
• What kind of door it is. A knob and deadbolt, a glass storefront, a fire rated condo suite door, a garage side door. This decides both the method and the price.
• For a vehicle, the make, model and year. Plus whether it has a turn key ignition or a push button start, and critically whether you still have any working key anywhere, including one at home. That last answer changes an automotive quote more than anything else does.
• What identification you can produce. If your wallet is inside the locked property, say so on the call. A neighbour who can vouch for you, a property manager, or a concierge confirming your occupancy will normally settle it.
• Whether anyone is at risk. A child or pet shut in a vehicle, or someone trapped inside a building, is a 911 call rather than a locksmith call. We will tell you that rather than dispatching a van that arrives too late to matter.
