|---|---|---|
| House lockout | from $35 | Opening a locked door without damage wherever the lock allows. |
| Car lockout | from $35 | Opening the vehicle at the roadside, without damaging the seal or the lock. |
| Lock change or installation | from $35 | Labour to fit new hardware. The lock itself is quoted with it. |
| Car key made | from $100 | Cutting a key at the vehicle. Programming is priced separately below. |
Each figure is a starting price in Canadian dollars for the simplest version of that job. Hardware, the hour and what we find on the door move it, and you are told the full total before a van is dispatched, in writing by text if you ask. Nothing is added on arrival that was not flagged first. Call (289) 324-0340 for a firm quote.
What counts as after hours, and why the distinction matters
Most trades work a weekday daytime window. Locks do not respect it, and the awkward truth is that lock problems concentrate precisely outside it: people come home at night, businesses close at night, and vehicles get locked in car parks on Saturday afternoons.
The reason the distinction matters commercially is that after hours availability is expensive to provide. Someone has to be reachable, a technician has to be able to respond, and the van has to be stocked, at hours when there may be no calls at all. A business that genuinely offers it is carrying that cost.
Which is why the question worth asking any locksmith advertising 24 hour service is not whether they answer the phone at midnight, but whether the person answering can dispatch. A call centre answers. A locksmith attends.
The situations that genuinely cannot wait
Not everything needs an after hours callout, and there is no sense paying for one when the morning would do. These are the cases where it is the right call.
- You cannot get into your homeParticularly with children, in cold weather, or where medication is inside. This is the most common after hours call and the most straightforward.
- A door will not lockAn unsecured property overnight is a risk to the contents and often a problem for an insurance policy. Getting it locked cannot wait.
- Keys have been stolenThe property is compromised from the moment the keys left, and rekeying the same night is the response.
- A business cannot open, or cannot closeA retail unit that cannot lock at eleven at night, or a warehouse whose morning shift cannot get in at five, is a trading loss for every hour it continues.
- A vehicle is locked and neededA car park closing, a shift starting, a long drive home from somewhere with no transit.
- A key has snapped in a door in useEspecially in cold weather, and especially where it is the only door.
What can genuinely wait until morning
An honest locksmith will tell you when you do not need them tonight, and it is a reasonable question to ask on the phone.
Non urgent work that costs less in daylight includes planned rekeying, hardware upgrades, installing new locks on doors that currently lock fine, master key system work, access control installation, and anything where the right part has to be ordered.
There is also a middle category worth knowing about: things that feel urgent but are actually safe overnight. A deadbolt that is stiff but still working, a handle that is loose but functional, a fob that has stopped working on a car that still starts with the key. All of those will keep, and they cost less on Tuesday morning.
If you call and the situation is one of those, expect to be told so. Booking an unnecessary night callout is not a service.
How after hours pricing should work
There is nothing improper about an after hours rate. Providing coverage at three in the morning costs more than providing it at three in the afternoon, and a business that pretends otherwise is either not really covering those hours or is recovering it somewhere less visible.
What matters is that the rate is stated before dispatch and does not move afterwards. Ask for the total, ask specifically whether that includes the after hours component, and ask what would change it. Then ask for it in a text.
The pattern to refuse is the low headline number that becomes something else on arrival. If a quoted price rises substantially once the technician is at your door, you are entitled to decline the work and pay nothing beyond any callout you actually agreed to. Under Ontario's Consumer Protection Act a consumer generally cannot be charged more than ten percent above an estimate they agreed to, and a written quote by text is exactly the kind of evidence that makes that provision usable.
That protection is one of the practical reasons to insist on the number in writing before the van moves, even at an inconvenient hour.
Staying safe during an after hours callout
You are letting a stranger open your door in the dark, and a few sensible habits cost nothing.
Ask for identification when the technician arrives, and check that the name and business match who you called. Note the vehicle. If something feels wrong, you are entitled to decline the work and close the door.
Expect to be asked for your own identification, and take it as a good sign rather than an inconvenience. A locksmith who does not check is a locksmith who would not check for anyone else either.
Get an itemised invoice carrying the legal business name and street address, and pay by a traceable method rather than cash where you can. If you are waiting alone at night, wait somewhere lit and public where possible: a lobby, a concierge desk, a twenty four hour business, or your car with the doors locked, rather than a dark driveway or an empty parking level.
